Opening Ice Cream Social
An Ice Cream Social takes place in
the garden area of the school each fall to
welcome new and returning students, their
families, and Sunny Hollow staff at the start
of the new school year.
Parent Coffee
Every other Friday morning throughout the
year, rotating volunteer Sunny Hollow parents
host Parent Coffee. These events
take place in the garden (or the school basement
during inclement weather) and provide opportunities
for parents to meet, make connections, and
socialize.
Wonderful Welcoming Wednesdays
Wonderful Welcoming Wednesdays are an opportunity
for family members to visit their children's
house for an hour or so after class at the
end of the day and observe the work that they
would like to show you. Younger ones might
show you the correct way to cut pickles and
carrots, or pour water...older ones may show
you how they determine even and odd numbers,
or write and illustrate a story.
Fall Festival
The Fall Festival, a celebration that
includes a pumpkin sale, t-shirt and sweatshirt
sale, cake walk, refreshments, a childrens
bike derby, and a used book sale, is a highly
anticipated tradition at Sunny Hollow and
takes place at the end of October. Parent
volunteers help to make this event a fun occasion
for all families.
Parent Education Nights
Parent Education Nights, sponsored
by the Sunny Hollow Childrens House
and Elementary Guides, are special evenings
devoted to the explanation and experience
of Montessori education for parents and are
held throughout the year with varying topics.
Past topics have included The Mathematical
Mind, The Third (Kindergarten)
Year, Silent Journey (a
sensorial experience of the Montessori environment),
and Montessori Education in the Elementary
Years.
Great Gala
The Great Gala, a celebration
for Sunny Hollow parents, staff and adult
guests, is the largest fundraiser and signature
social event of the school year, featuring
a silent auction, dancing, food and drinks.
Funds raised by this event are used toward
the successful operation of the school, student
scholarships and capital improvements.
The event inspires the volunteer participation
of many parents and staff. Getting involved
in planning the event by serving on committees
provides opportunities for community engagement
and cooperation at Sunny Hollow.
Winter Program
A Winter Program, held each December
on the last day before winter break, showcases
a song recital by each Childrens House
and Elementary classroom and is followed by
a luncheon celebration for students, families
and guests.
Open House
Each winter, Sunny Hollow sponsors
two open houses (one in December and one in
January) for prospective new families, to
showcase the Montessori classrooms and introduce
families to Sunny Hollows educational
model and philosophy. Parents in the
Sunny Hollow community help the Childrens
House and Elementary staff by giving tours
and answering questions about our programs.
Spring Fun Fair
Each spring, Sunny Hollow hosts a Fun
Fair on the school grounds to entertain
children of the community, their families
and guests. Highlights include moonwalks,
carnival games, face painting, balloons, a
cake walk and refreshments. Parent volunteers
plan the event and ensure its success as a
child-centered celebration of the school and
community.
Annual Picnic
As a capstone to the school year, Sunny Hollow
hosts an Annual Picnic on the evening
of the last school day. Held at a local
park, the pot-luck picnic provides families
and staff a means to forge connections and
celebrate the beginning of summer.
